Completed research to determine ways to upgrade the website and programs so they are accessible to those with disabilities.
Being one of the most rewarding and informative tasks throughout my time at The World Food Prize, I was asked to research ways in which the website could be improved, along with our programs. The improvements I researched were mostly tailored to the Deaf community, along with a variety of different disabilities, to ensure that every student has the ability to participate in our programs.
Completing Necessary Research
I utilized internet resources and reached out to people in my life who have had experience teaching those in the Deaf community. My research suggested the following improvements:
- Include multiple contact options (more than just a phone number) on the website.
- All videos need subtitles or captions. (While most of the recent videos published on YouTube have this option, there are older videos that need to be updated to include subtitles.)
- I also found that using simple English is appreciated because there are some people from the Deaf community who learned Sign Language first, with English as a second language. (The organization has already created a simplified version of our Program Guide for those whose first language is not English.)
- Sites suggest linking-social media clearly so the hearing impaired can use this alternative to learn more about the organization.
- Finally, the website needs to be easily navigated so that Deaf students are not overwhelmed when trying to find information.
